About James Roberts-Thomson

Mr Roberts-Thomson lives in Devonport and works as a Specialist General Surgeon in North West Tasmania.

 

James spent his childhood at Table Cape in North West Tasmania.  He studied medicine at the University of Tasmania, and after obtaining his medical degree worked in Adelaide, Darwin, the United Kingdom and South Africa, before returning to Tasmania in 2004.

 

James has a broad interest and skills in general surgery including:

  • Abdominal (bowel, gall bladder, and hernia surgery)

  • Breast (male and female)

  • Thyroid

  • Melanoma and other skin cancers

  • Endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy)

Outside of hospital work, James enjoys church related activities and is a member of Rotary Devonport North.  He likes to keep fit and enjoys running, cycling, swimming, triathlons, rowing, bush walking and mountaineering.

Professional interests and memberships

  • Active in teaching undergraduate students with University of Tasmania,  and with postgraduate surgical education and training (SET)

  • Appointed to North West Regional Hospital as a staff specialist in general surgery

  • Member of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons

  • Member of Australian Medical Association

  • Member of Breast Surgeons Australia and New Zealand

  • Associate member of Australia and New Zealand Gastric and Oesophageal Surgery Association

  • Associate member of Australia and New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic & Biliary Association

  • Melanoma study group
